Invitations are in the mail for Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum’s Festival of Friends 15th Anniversary celebration at the Knippenberg Center for Education at Laurelwood Arboretum, 725 Pines Lake Road West in Wayne. The event, which is scheduled for Saturday, September 15 from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, will include the dedication of a Founders’ Garden to honor the eight people who established the Friends organization. Tickets to the Festival are $60 per person and can be ordered online at the Arboretum website. For additional information, please call 973-831-5675.
The Festival will feature an exhibit of paintings and photographs by local artists and photographers and will include paintings by Laurelwood’s benefactor, Dorothy Knippenberg (nee Moore). She was a graduate of the Pratt Institute in New York and an accomplished artist. For refreshments, there will be hors d’oeuvres by Viaggio Ristorante of Wayne accompanied by wine, beer and nonalcoholic beverages. Jazz pianist Gary Mancinelli will entertain on the piano. Local artist Nancy Rogers will exhibit her work at the Knippenberg Center for Education at Laurelwood Arboretum, 725 Pines Lake Drive West in Wayne, from August 12th through September 3rd. She will host an Artist’s Reception from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sunday, August 19th with refreshments and live music.

Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum will welcome families to a free Children’s Butterfly Day on Sunday, August 5th, from 2:30 to 5 pm at Laurelwood Arboretum, 725 Pines Lake Drive West in Wayne. There will be a butterfly story time for youngsters, fun butterfly crafts, face painting, a butterfly art project, live butterfly demonstrations and displays, and tours through the sensory and pollinator gardens with Laurelwood’s Executive Director, Elaine Fogerty.
The popular Gentle Chair Yoga program at Laurelwood Arboretum will resume with summer sessions offered on Wednesdays from July 18 through August 29 from 11 am to noon. The session will take place indoors at the air conditioned Knippenberg Center for Education at Laurelwood Arboretum, 725 Pines Lake Drive West, Wayne. There is a $5 fee per class for members of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum and a $10 fee per class for nonmembers.
The classes will be led by Robin Abrett, a Kripalu Yoga teacher with advanced certification and trainings. “No experience is necessary to participate in the class, and there is no need to get up and down from the floor,” Robin said. “Chair yoga allows you to work slowly with an understanding of any injuries you may have. We will be working in socks or barefoot, and you should wear loose, comfortable clothing.”
In addition to her professional activities, Robin is a members of the Board of Directors of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum, which is sponsoring the classes. She is also chairperson of the organization’s tour guide program.
Richard Stillman and Friends will perform “The Spirit of Vaudeville” at the Knippenberg Center for Education at Laurelwood Arboretum on Sunday, July 15 at 4 pm. The arboretum is located at 725 Pines Lake Drive West in Wayne. This musical variety show celebrates the vaudevillians of the jazz age. The tale is told through banjo strumming, tap dancing, ukulele and mandolin solos, and Charleston dances.
Stillman is an actor, musician, singer, tap dancer and storyteller who plays multiple instruments. He has performed on Broadway, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and in theaters from New Jersey to Alaska. He has played at the New Jersey Folk Festival, opened for Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog, and performs every year at the New Jersey Storytelling Festival as a musical storyteller. “The Spirit of Vaudeville” won the Best Concert Award at the United Solo Theater Fest in New York City.
The concert is sponsored by Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum and the Ira A. Roschelle, MD Family Foundation. All donations will go toward educational programs and community activities at Laurelwood. The requested donation is $15 per person or $35 for a family of three or more.
